Prism Awards Recognize Parenthood

“Black Swan,” “The Fighter” and four popular television shows were among the big winners at the 15th annual Prism Awards, which recognize movies and TV series that bring attention to substance abuse and mental health issues. The ceremony took place Thursday at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Darren Aronofsky’s Oscar-winning ballet drama “Black Swan” received the top award in the feature film- mental health category, while David O. Russell’s Massachusetts-set “The Fighter,” which netted Christian Bale a best supporting actor Academy Award for his depiction of Dick Eklund, a man grappling with crack addiction, was recognized in the feature film-substance use category.

In television, AMC’s “Mad Men” received a Prism in the drama series episode-substance use category, while ABC received a nod for “Grey’s Anatomy” and the attention it paid to mental health issues. NBC’s “Parenthood” was recognized for its look at Asperger’s syndrome, while Lifetime’s “Drop Dead Diva” was recognized in the comedy category.

The Prism Awards, which are produced by the Entertainment Industries Council in collaboration with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, also recognizes specific performance. Winners included Peter Krause, Monica Potter and Max Burkholder for “Parenthood,” Halle Berry for the feature film “Frankie & Alice,” Toni Collette for Showtime’s series “United States of Tara,” Claire Danes for HBO’s “Temple Grandin,” KaDee Strickland for ABC’s drama “Private Practice,” Tony Denison for TNT’s “The Closer” and Aaron Paul for AMC’s series “Breaking Bad.”

Presenters included Steven Tyler, Nicolette Sheridan, Robert Forster and Dr. Drew Pinsky.
